Lenny’s House
Lenny’s House transforms an original 1970s Wybalena Grove townhouse through a sensitive and layered renovation — both internally and externally — bringing new life to its distinctive split-level heritage while honouring its original context. Designed for contemporary living yet rooted in the character and spirit of the original scheme, the renovation weaves together functional upgrades and material integrity to extend the life of this modest but special home.
Wybalena Grove, conceived in the mid-1970s by Michael Dysart and collaborators, is a celebrated example of late 20th-century “Sydney Regional” medium-density housing — terraced and staggered townhouses resting in mature bushland, with Bowral bricks, stained timbers, steeply pitched tiled roofs, split-level plans, and a deliberate intention to integrate with the natural landscape.
This renovation sought to reinforce that original ethos: to enhance connection with light, landscape and the surrounding bush reserve, while accommodating contemporary family life. Inside, we designed a new kitchen and bathroom, and re-imagined the living spaces — all designed to retain the warmth, modesty and textural richness that define Wybalena Grove while improving functionality.
Beyond the interior, the project extends to new decks, a much needed storage shed, and landscaping — all executed to harmonise with the site’s bushland setting and the original architectural language. Outdoor decks and sheds are carefully integrated, their forms and materials chosen to sit quietly, respecting the bush-backdrop. New landscaping considered native planting and improved pedestrian approaches to both aspects of the townhouse, reinforcing connection to the communal bushland and contributing to a seamless transition between interior, exterior and wider context of the ‘Grove’.
The result is a home that feels both born of its 1970s origins and wholly contemporary — a respectful continuation of Dysart’s original vision. Through considered interventions, the renovation balances heritage sensitivity, environmental belonging, and everyday practicality. The house emerges renewed, ready for decades more of living, while retaining the modesty, warmth and bushland-anchored character that make Wybalena Grove unique.
